Slug Profile
Slug — Arion lusitanicus Size 0 - 15cm Lifespan 2 — 6 years Habitat — Dark moist shelters under leaves etc. Are active above 5 degrees. Diet — Plants, fungus and decaying vegetables, mainly your favourite plants. Reproduction — Hermaphrodite slugs can lay between 20 and 100 eggs on the soil which they can fertilize themselves. Respiration — Slugs breath oxygen through a hole in the side of their head called a pneumostome, meaning airhole. They also breath oxygen through their skin and need a constant supply of moisture to avoid dehydration. Tentacles and senses — Slugs have two pairs of tentacles on their head the larger tentacle having a light sensitive eyespot the smaller are used for smell and touch. Predators — Birds, fish, frogs and toads, hedgehogs and arthropods such as centipedes and glow worms, less welcome in the garden moles, rats and badgers.
